History & Enrollment

St. Joseph School, an integral part of St. Joseph Parish, has a relatively short history in a parish having roots dating to 1846 when Father Bernard McQuaid, pastor of the Madison parish, celebrated Mass in the Murtha home on West Main Street. In 1962, St. Joseph School opened under the direction of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. The first graduation took place in June 1968.

In 1971, direction of the parish school was transferred to the Sisters of Christian Charity, who along with lay teachers, continue to staff the school. Kindergarten was added to the school in 1983, extending St. Joseph School from Kindergarten through Grade 8.

In 1988, amid much festivity, St. Joseph School celebrated 25 years of Catholic education in the Mendhams. In 1999, with 265 students, we look forward to the year 2000.
