Principal's Responsibilities
"Principals foster community among faculty and students. They understand the Catholic School as a part of larger communities, religious and secular. They collaborate with parish, area, or diocesan personnel in planning and implementing programs for a total, integrated approach to catechesis. They also establish norms and procedures of accountability and evaluation within the school, and in relations to the larger community." -

A. Religious
The principal:
ensures that the school philosophy contains specific religious elements and reflects current Church teaching
recommends for hiring only those teachers who contribute to the religious mission of the school
supervises the religion curriculum, texts, and instruction
invites and coordinates the involvement of parish clergy into the life of the school
provides for the ongoing spiritual development and catechetical updating of the faculty
strives to build up a living and active faith community among teachers, parents, and students
coordinates with other parish staff to provide:
- Sacramental Preparation
- Service Programs
- Family Life Program/AIDS Education
- Vocation Program
- Social Justice Program
- Liturgies, retreats, sacramental opportunities and prayer services
B. Administration
The principal:
sets absence and lateness procedures
establishes and reviews a discipline policy
establishes and reviews a homework policy
follows diocesan grading and reporting procedures
establishes and maintains dress guidelines
provides guidelines for hallways, lunchroom, and playground
maintains adequate records
establishes procedures for suspension, expulsion, promotion, and non-promotion
knows referral agencies for problems which the school cannot solve
provides health services and procedures
registers children who are the proper age and whose parents have presented the necessary sacramental, academic, and health records
trains and instructs students in fire safety by means of fire drills
supports student activities and insures adult supervision for all school-related programs, including Extended Day Care
attends regularly-scheduled staff meetings
C. Personnel
The principal:
interviews and recommends teachers to be hired, clarifies faculty responsibilities, assists new teachers and conducts orientation days
supervises and evaluates teachers and staff, and provides appropriate in-service
schedules periodic teacher conferences, completes written evaluations, and recommends contract renewals or dismissals
delineates faculty responsibilities and expectations in a faculty handbook
schedules regular faculty meetings and establishes internal channels of communications
educates staff in school law requirements
attends professional meetings, diocesan and local
D. Curriculum
The principal:
knows the scope and sequence of the present curriculum
reviews curriculum in relation to school philosophy, needs of present students, and continuity
involves faculty in selecting texts and materials
reviews teachers' lesson plans and other records
schedules classroom observations, both formal and informal
motivates the faculty to integrate Gospel values in all curriculum areas
supervises the reporting system and is apprised of student grouping
supervises the work of teachers to see that it is conducted in accordance with the law of the State and policies of the Diocesan Schools Office
E. Finances and Government Aid
The principal:
cooperates in the budget-planning process with the pastor and education council
sees that tuition, salary, and other budget decisions are made
provides financial reports to appropriate parties
carefully keeps all financial records
is involved in prompt tuition collections
is involved in prompt payment of outstanding bills
assists in fund-raising programs
provides aid to needy students
monitors federal and state assistance programs and assists in the implementation of all funded programs
monitors compliance issues
informs parents of current efforts to expand (or deny) aid to non-public schools
presents to the pastor concerns regarding maintenance and safety
F. Public Relations and Community-Building
The principal:
encourages the organization and maintenance of a parent association and supports its endeavors
plans regular parent communication procedures (newsletter, letters, open house, parent-teacher conferences)
organizes a volunteer program to invite parent assistance and involvement in the school
produces a parent handbook with the assistance of parents
recognizes parent volunteers on a regular basis
establishes and/or maintains a channel of communication for the purpose of good community relations and recruitment;

- home-school meetings, notices
- school information brochure
- newsletters
prepares an agenda in cooperation with the parent association executive committee and education council and reports to them regularly on matters relative to the specific organization
